Scenic Backwaters and Beaches of Kerala

We journey along the quiet backwaters and lagoons of Kerela on board a traditional house boat ( Kettuvallom ) and visit sleepy villages enroute to the fascinated old spice town of Cochin . The largest backwater stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad Lake which flows through three districts and opens out into the sea at the Kochi Port. The Astamudi lake, literarly having eight arms, which covers a major portion of Kollam district in the south, is the second largest and is considered the gateway to the backwaters. Away from the coast the wildlife sanctuaries at the Periyar and Kottayam are home to numerous wild elephant, leopard, tiger,sloth bear, the rare Nilgiri Tahr and an abundance of colourful birdlife. Houseboat, KeralaDay 01 Cochin
Arrive Cochin International Airport. Transfer to Hotel Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 02 Cochin
Morning half day sightseeing of Cochin city visiting Jewish Synagogue, built in 1568 AD and decorated with copper plates bearing the Hebrew script and hand painted chinese tiles. Also visit the Mattan-Cherry Palace also called the Dutch Palace built by the Portugese and presented to the King of Cochin in 1555 AD. The Chinese fishing nets at the entrance of the harbour, along the backwaters are a fascinating sight. These nets that line the sea front exhibit a mechanical method of catching traders to the coast of Malabar. Afternoon at leisure. Evening witness the Kathkali dance show. Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 03 Cochin-Periyar
Morning leave by road for Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary. ( 05 hours drive ).Arrive and stay at Hotel.Late afternoon Boat safari at Lake Periyar. Periyar is one of the best in the country for watching and photographing wildlife.Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 04 Periyar - Kumarakom
After breakfast transfer to Kumarakom ( 04 hours drive ). Check-in at Hotel.Sunset cruise in the evening.Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 05 Kumarakom-Alleppey-Kollam
Early morning visit to the bird sanctuary. After breakfast visit
to the Farm House and transfer to Alleppey for coast cruises. Coast cruises feature single and two-bedroom houseboats, complete with kitchens, bathrooms and your own personal cooks-cum-attendants-cum-boatmen. This house boat is known as 'Kettuvallom', the traditional rice barge, with its sturdy build and stately carriage.The boat hulls are made from seasoned 'Anjili' (Jackfruit) logs, that have a natural gentle curvature. Keels are flat, because the rivers here can get mighty shallow at times, and also to allow the boat to be easily punted. (they come with a quiet outboard motor too, so the boatman can get some rest ).The boat trip between Alleppey and Kollam is the longest and most enchanting experience on the backwaters of Kerala.Overnight stay at the RICE BOAT to reach next day morning at Kollam.

Kovalam Beach, KovalamDay 06 Kollam
Early morning arrive at Kollam - the gateway to the magnificent backwaters of Kerala. Kollam is the centre of the country's cashew trading and processing industry and one of the oldest ports on the Malabar coast. Thirty percent of this historic town is covered by the Ashtamudi Lake, which forms a part of the world-renowned backwater, cruises of Kerala. Enjoy the sunset cruises at the Ashtamudi Lake. The effect is magical especially at twilight and at dawn. The backwaters offer endless opportunity for fishing, aquatic sports and cruises. The annual Ashtamudi Crafts and Art festival takes place in December/January every year at Kollam. Stay at Hotel.

Day 07 Kollam - Kovalam
Morning drive to Kovalam, an internationally renowned Kovalam beach ( 02 hrs. drive).Upon arrival check in at Hotel. Afternoon relax on the beach.Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 08 Kovalam
Full day at leisure on the beach.It is the place to rejuvenate your body mind and soul ecstatically.Overnight at Hotel.

Day 09 Kovalam - Trivandrum - Mumbai
Morning transfer to Trivandrum - The capital of Modern Kerala and the seat of erstwhile travancore Maharaja's (King). Visit the Art Gallery, Padmanakhaswami Temple and Museum.Transfer to airport to leave by air for Mumbai . Arrive and transfer to airport to fly back home\ onward destination.
